The 96 900s has a history of sludge buildup inside the engine. The cause is unknown, Some say it is related to oil changes. I think it has to do with a ventalation problem.
What happens is sludge gets everywhere inside the engine. It comes loose and gets to the screen at the oil pickup. Gets stuck there and blocks the oil flow.
Get enough there and oil can't flow enough. With the low oil pressure parts inside the engine wear out. First to go are the ballance shaft bearings. Once they seize the ballance chain strips the sprockets.
The next to fail is the rod bearings. This is quite noticeable.
In your situation, I would get the car to a shop and check the oil pressure first. If it is real low then you are looking at a rebuild.
One option is to buy a used engine and go through it.
This is what I did. I replaced the engine and saved lots of money.
