Nope. You don't need the chain. I had the chain removed from my 95 SEt at 172K (she has 223K on her now) and you would never know that the balance shaft chain was gone. No vibration, no rattle. Some genius at Saab probably dreamed up that design as a money maker for the dealer--when the chains wear our and make noise, the neophyte Saab owner takes the car to the dealer and voila!! They remove over a grand from the wallet of the poor guy (or gal) and replace the chain, which will need to be replaced eventually again. I don't have the time or the room to work on my small fleet, so I had my indie (the extremely talented guys at ConnTech--Mike and Kevin) remove the chain. I don't know if they took the sprockets as well.I would suppose they did, because if there's no chain, then there's no need for a sprocket. You can call Mike at 401-738-3665 and ask him how he did it, or, if you're coming to the convention, look for his very rare white proto-SPG and ask him in person.
If you DIY, you might as well replace the timing chain (if it looks worn) because you'll be right there.
