The rack is mounted in rubber, lots of it. The original rack before 1995&1/2 was bigger with a thin rubber mounting bushing. Later production had a smaller rack, so they filled in the rubber bushing to take up the space. This simply is too much rubber and the rack can defect side to side, and fore and aft.
Fore and aft deflection changes the toe in a wee bit. Side to side deflection means that the relationship between the steering wheel and front wheels is variable.
When you eliminate the rubber in the rack, and the control arms, then when you accelerate hard, even on uneven pavement, if you hold the steering wheel straight and still, the vehicle goes straight. You still feel forces in the steering wheel, but you can control the steering instead of fighting with a snake.
These steering defects have nothing to do with power, except that you can now use power without loosing control. This gets more important when you increase boost.
Also, when you get rid of the rubbery blubbery bushings, the cornering is profoundy improved. It is like you have both front wheels pulling you around a corner, instead of just the outer one. Add a SAS rear swaybar and you are having major fun.
There are three bushings in the control arms that should be replaced if you want optimal performance. The bushings are cheap. The install is rather difficult for the best DIY folks or expensive when you pay for shop labor for the install. You need to adjust the toe-in after changing control arm bushings. And set the toe-in to less than factory spec, as there is not the rubbery bits to absorb the toe-in forces as before.
