Metallic Noise coming from Water Pump

I have enjoyed diagnosing my 1997 Saab 900 SET Convertible using valuable information gained from all the previous postings- so I thought it was time to give back and build the knowledge base.
At about 50,000 mile my car developed a noise from the belt area that sounded like some dropped a quarter in the turbo charger. I was hopeful it was just a bad idler pulley. After replacing the idler pulley (and converting to the short belt set-up described on this site) I discovered it was not the belt idler pulley- but the belt needed to be replaced anyways. I used the GM belt referenced under the short belt conversion- got it from a Buick dealer.
I was sure that the bearings had gone out on the alternator or the water pump had gone. Not wanting to tackle either job myself- I took the car into my friends at the Swedish Auto Factory in San Jose, CA. Sure enough it was a bad water pump. They replaced the water pump 1.5 hours of labor, plus water pump $142 and a gallon of Saab coolant $12.25. All total to replace the water pump it was $382.48 out the door.
I did the short belt conversion myself. Paid $50 at the dealership for a new upper pulley and another $40 at the Buick dealer for the belt.
Wouldn't you know now my battery has gone out. I write another post on replacing my factory battery with a new Optima battery.
