Transmission controls faulty

I have a 1997 900S five-door. Automatic transmission, about 101,000 miles. For the last few months, when starting the car for the first time in the morning, the "check engine" and next to it, the "check gearbox" (may not be exact names) lights both come on. What actually is happening is that the car starts out as though the "Wionter" swithc has been depressed (it has not been). The car starts out in either third or fourth gear. While this is happening, neither the "Winter" or "Sport" switched show up on the inst. panel when depressed, and the gear selector does not control the gear you are in (I refuse to try reverse). After driving a few blocks, I stop, turn the car off, restart the car and, nine times out of ten, everything is restored to 'normal'. The car starts out in first gear, the "Winter" and "Sport" lights work and the switches are functional. The engine and gearbox lights are still on, but reset after three or four cycles of stopping and starting the engine as on a multiple-stop shopping trip.
The transmission itself works fine, when not burdened by the initial start-up problem. There may be another case like this buried in the other emails, but I have not thouroughly looked. Anyone have any ideas???
Thanks,
Dave
