The Neutral safety switch (range switch) is avialble from site sponsers like eEuroparts.com for a little over $250 USD. It takes about 4 hours to install, or about another $250 USD in technican labor.
It is no known whether the neutral safety switch contacts get dirty or fouled with grease or what exactly. But the symptoms can usually be eliminated for a period of time by moving the gear shift lever through the entire range (P to 1) a dozen or so times. This is best done with the ignition on, but the engine off.
Search for "neutral safety" for more information.
