Getting good reading on ATF level

Hi all,
I've tried several times to get a good reading on the ATF level, just to check, and I can't work out where the level reads on the dipstick, even following the proceedure in the manual. What I see is that there is a fair bit of oil on *parts* of the dipstick quite a long way up past the mark.
Basically I just don't see a clear line the way I would normally expect on, say, and engine oil dipstick. (I hesistate to mention that I find the engine one pretty tricky on this car too!)
Is there a knack to this?
What's the significance of shifting it to N and back to P during the test? Won't that splash fluid all over the shop, and it's a pretty narrow band between min and max.
Thanks
