I had the opportunity to check out the area in the tranny where the dipstick goes. There's this great little "pan" on the front of the tranny that was leaking around it's gasket, and I took it off and replaced the gasket a few months ago. (95 900s with 2.3 and auto) this small pan (about 2x4 in size) covers the small area where the tranny fluid stick goes. From what I could see, it basically allows the fluid level to sit in a small chamber to get an accurate reading. This means that there shouldn't be much sloshing or anything like that going on in a larger pan-type environment.

When I check the fluid level, I make sure the car is a operating temp and that I've driven it for about 10-15 minutes. I stop the car and put it in park, then move the shifter to R and to D and to R, then back to park. This makes sure that the fluid has been evenly distributed to all of the tranny areas and you don't get any false hi or lo readings. After this, I leave it running in Park and wait a minute, take the stick out, wipe it and replace it, let it sit for about 15 seconds then pull it out for the reading. Because of this small chamber, you may get some extra fluid higher on the stick (it will be spotty), but you should get a good even level from the fluid itself. If you see a gap of dry on the stick, then it means that the fluid level is somewhere below that and you're just getting residual fluid higher up.
