Hey man-
Long time fan of this site, though I haven't had time to post much lately. Funny thing is that I have this exact same problem, all the time, and I found something that works for my car. I have a 1996 900S, 6 disc changer. Here's some tricks that work well for me.
If you get in, and you hit the CD button and it doesn't respond, leave the car running and pop the trunk. Eject the CD holder from the changer. If you hear the audio from the radio go silent for a sec, you're good to go. The CD button will be working.
If not, turn of the car and turn it back on. It will work now.
This has never failed.
Now, this tip is new. I found that when it's all working well, and you park your car, turn of the ignition half way only...not all the way to the left, just half way. Wait about 3 seconds and you'll hear an audible "click" coming from the left dash area...I would guess this is an electrical rely or something, but if tyou wait til' it clicks and then turn your key to the left and remove it, the CD changer will work fine everytime.
That has worked for me (as long as I remeber to do it) for 3 mos now, never failed.
Still a pain in the butt, but cheaper than a new changer. Plus, maybe that relay is part of the problem and not the CD changers afterall??
