Hi fellow Saabers,
Can I get some feedback on what this might be? I searched the archives and found some potentials, but wnat to make sure. I am getting a lot of blackish, grayish smoke after starting the engine cold. It goes away after driving around a few minutes.
My '96 SET w/ auto tranny (my daily driver) has 78k. Just got done replacing headgasket less than 3k miles ago (did it myself). Also had a machine shop disassemble the head, clean, then re-assemble, after the head was resurfaced. Installed new NGK plugs. However, I didn't get to change the oil until about 500 miles later. Before I changed the oil, it started to develop whining noise near the timing chain area (may be the the chain against the guide). After I changed the oil, noise went away. BTW, reason I changed the headgasket was I had coolant in the oil issue, but wasn't too bad.
Anyone have any idea what it could be? I bought the service manual and and Haynes manual and followed the procedure very carefully. (except for changin oil right away). May be the two are not related? previous postings suggest it could be normal, could be valve stem seals going bad, or could be the catalytic or turbo going south. Any insights would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim from Michigan with too many Saabs
