Reliable is a relative term.....

My current method for owning a vehicle is to buy a new vehicle and then keep it for 10-15 years. I service the vehicle according to the 'severe driving' service recommendations which probably means 'over-maintaining' the vehicle.
I figure that the maintenance costs are about $100/month including tires, brakes, fluids, and repairs. It can be a bit less if I chose to do the repairs myself, but truthfully that option is less desirable as I grow older. Added to the cost of the car, this totals around $350/month over 10 years for a $30,000 vehicle. My vehicle insurance and vehicle registration costs continue to decrease over the 10-year period, which is a plus.
Others may prefer to lease a vehicle for $350/month for 3 years plus the cost of maintenance, or to drive something more mainstream like a Toyota/Lexus or Honda/Acura. I like driving more specialized European sport sedans or sport cars, especially ones they have been modified or tailored to my tastes. I feel that as long as they start every day and get me where I want to go (in fun and style), then it is money well spent.
In the end it is all relative. If I made a couple million a year, I would probably think my Ferrari or Maserati or Aston Martin was a reasonable, reliable vehicle. :o)
