A plastic bushing in the shift linkage can pop out of place and make you lose gears. Plus the shifter feels crazy lose when in neutral when this occurs.
If this is your problem you may be able to fix it by doing the following (this worked on my 1995 SET with old style linkage): reach into the engine compartment and feel around the shift linkage for an accordian shape rubber boot (shift linkage is between the fire wall and engine just above the trans; If you are not sure where it is, have someone move the shifter while you look in the engine compartment - the thing that moves is the linkage). Inside this boot (which was ripped open on my car - I think - as you can't see what you are doing in there) was the out-of-place bushing. Not sure that 'bushing' is the correct term - it is a plastic sleeve with a washer attached on the sleeve's firewall end. Slide it back into place (i.e., towards the engine). This happened to me twice and it took me quite a few minutes to get it back in the second time (so don't get discourage if you don't get it in right away). I went from being stuck far away from home and fearing my trans had blown to driving away in just a few minutes. I put a plastic tie on it and it hasn't come off since (4 months). I have been meaning to upgrade the shift linkage since I know I have problems, but the car shift very well. I haven't heard of anyone else doing this, so let the board know if this works.
