I just finished a repair of my tranny. Symptoms were not the same as yours, but the cause may be related. Inside the tranny are four forks that slide the gears in place. One is for reverse, one is for 1st and 2nd gear, one for 3/4 and the final one is for 5th. These are held in place with roll pins on rods that slide back and forth.
In my case, the roll pin on the 3/4 fork worked its way out and I couldn't shift the tranny. (It was locked in neutral.) Perhaps the pin on the 5th gear fork on your tranny has done the same. If so, the good news is that you don't have to take the entire tranny apart to repair it. The 5th gear fork is under the end cover of the tranny which only requires removal of about eight screws to get off.
If you intend to repair yourself, the biggest part of the job is removing the tranny from the car. A Haynes manual gives pretty good description of how to do it. A tranny manual (eEuroparts... <$15) is also helpful.
