The "performance" clutch is probably the clutch kit out of the SE Turbo, which I think uses a beefier pressure plate. I've had that Sachs clutch kit in my 900S 1995 for 15K and almost 2 years with no problems.
I find it hard to believe that your "clutch" blew up in 4 months. Im sure some component of it crapped out, but every single part of the clutch breaking in 4 months? B.S! Your clutch consists of a disc, pressure plate, Throwout bearing, pilot bearing, cable, and lever arm. As well as the flywheel it presses on. Your mechanic's desire to change every component blatantly shows his inability to properly diagnose the ACTUAL problem. Its the "I dont know what the problem is, so I'll just change every part(and charge you $$$ for it) and see if it goes away". There's no way every part was worn out or broken in 4 months.
I did have a problem with the "feel" of mine for the first year. I originally had a manually-adjustable aftermarket clutch cable installed (in place of the Saab self-adjusting) for the first year. It had difficulty maintaining the friction point of the clutch at a constant spot as temperatures changed. In hot weather, the friction point was AT the floor, and the top had lots of play. Opposite in cold weather. Switching back to the Saab self-adjusting cable made a huge difference and has been fine since.
What sort of cable did your mechanic put in? The Saab self-adjusters are notoriously bad, but I think we all just have to accept that you just have to replace it every 30-40K, since the manually adjustable sucks worse.
