I know bill's had unfortunate luck with synthetics, but I changed my '90 900 over at 120k miles w/o any oil dams breaking. Is the '95 2.3L turbocharged? If not, then you can pretty much use whatever API SL oil you want & get 5k miles out of it. I think the Saab OE 5W-30 Syn Blend is a great value for the amount of protection it offers to n/a engines.
However, if your 900S is turbo'd then I'd go with a good Group III syn at the very least. Since previous oil is unknown, Shell Rotella T syn 5W-40($13/gal at WalMart) would provide adequate turbo protection at a reasonable cost. And to combat sludge & leaks at the same time, I'd definitely use Auto-Rx sooner rather than later.
