I would strongly recommend buying a 97 or later, an SET which has the faster and more reliable 2.0 turbo engine...and the SET model is often "loaded" or nearly loaded as you mentioned are looking for that...and as you mentioned you want an auto you'll be good with a 97 or 98--if you do change your mind and want a manual, get a 98 or later which features the hydraulic clutch.

That said a 97 900 SET Auto in great shape with 170K km or less may run you a little over your desired purchase price, or it may not, you could get lucky and find a great deal if you shop around for a while. But I say it's worth it to spend a few more bucks on the "right" car now, so you won't have to pay more on repairs in the long run. As it is certainly worth it to spend, say for example, an extra $500 on a car a great shape that won't need potentially a few thousand in repairs that the $500 cheaper car might.

That said, again, you should be prepared for higher maintenance costs on a Saab (or any european car for that matter) than you would on your Honda...but usually nothing too crazy--search this board for more details the few repairs that can be very expensive and double check with your mechanic that these are A-OK. And Saabs can be as reliable as any other car when properly maintained (it just costs more to maintain them than a Honda :-) )

Obviously, each individual car's reliablitiy varies depending on which specific model it is, how well it has been maintained/cared for, and a little luck never hurts. Having a good Saab mechanic check it out is essential.

Furthermore, the slightly higher average costs of Saab ownership (again vs.your Honda, but not any more on average than other Euro cars) is more than worth it in my opinion for the driving enjoyment, utility, comfort and satisfaction that comes from owning and driving a Saab...and apparently, you seem to have an interest in an "enhanced" driving experience if you are even considering a Saab, so go for it, but be ready for a little extra time and money to be spent on maintenance vs. your Honda.
