Pushing the petal that far when bleeding the brakes or advancing the pads after replacing, can damage the MC cup seals when they go past areas not normally travelled. There can be rust deposits which will cut the edge of the seals. Best to put a block of wood behind the petal to limit travel.
New pads can feel spongy until the surface of the pads becomes consolodated. When you do all four, it feels worse. I know that your brakes are weak and dangerous, but if you can find a road with little or no traffic, try some repeated stops to get the pads heated up. If you find that the petal feel is improving, then stop more agressively. Don't come to a dead stop, and always avoid clamping the pads hard to the rotors when stop when the brakes are hot. Try to finish hard braking when you need to come to a full stop, by having less and less petal force as you approach the stopping point.
You will know quite quickly if this is going to help. One way or another, the new pads are responsible for some sponginess.
