I just replaced mine using the Haynes manual and the instructions form this site (see link).
In my case the auto trans would hesitate before engaging Drive or Reverse, resulting in the car giving a Check Engine light, Check gearbox light and going into limp home mode (Drive engages 3rd gear only). It would reset itself after the next start-up or two. The problem got progressively worse (from once a month to once every couple days) over about a year.
The Neutral Safety switch is hidden under the battery tray. There are lots of electrical connectors and other items to disconnect to get to it. The work was not terribly difficult (a little hard on my big meaty paws) but did require some long extensions for the ratchet and a set of open end wrenches. It took me about 3 hours to do the job. It is something a seasoned DIY person can tackle easily. Probably not the best thing for a novice to try, many from the stand point of needing a few odd wrench sizes and being able to keep track of all the items you removed and put them back in their proper places.
