If the turbo fails, you replace the turbo. Big whoop. You're out a couple of hundred for a salvage yard replacement, 600 to 700 for a new high output one. If the timing belt fails -- which DOES happen with frightening regularity if not replaced every 30K miles -- your engine is shot and you're out $3,500 minimum.
I disagree with Mark only in the minor point that I've found the NA (normally aspirated) 4-cylinder to be poky when I need extra horses, like a freeway onramp. For not much more dough, you can have the turbo and the 35 extra horses under the hood. I have a 97 900SET auto, and concur that it's great in stop-and-go traffic. My next Saab will be a manual, though.
Good luck!
