To the Saab experts from a newbie who could really use some advice!
I unfortunately found out about this site after my engine died while driving on the highway last month. I'm the original owner of a '95 90SE Conv with only 50K miles (don't drive it a lot) where the Tensioning/pulley system failed and the belt came off (you can see the cracked housing where it came off on the side of the engine). The engine just died suddenly and there was NO noise or smoke just no power.
Has anyone had a similar experience and how much engine damage could have occured? The Saab dealer thinks the repairs could range from $4500-$6500 depending on parts (labor is $2000-$2500 of the cost). Saab USA is willing to pitch in upto $4000 but I'm trying to figure out if the damage might be more on the the low or higher side? I can apply the Saab credit to a new Saab but not sure which way to go (fix my Conv that's in good shape otherwise and I love to drive in the summer or buy a new lower end 9-3 non-conv). Are there any other major expense might occur besides rebuilding the engine? New clutch (manual transmission)? Starter? Water Pump?
I'd appreciate any input since I have to make a decision pretty soon. Thanks...Paul
