LOW OIL, is there no warning light on dash?

Hi folks!
I previously posted that my '95 900 SE Turbo was sounding more and more like a diesel. The nice people on this board suggested I check my oil level, as they thought the lifters might not be getting sufficient lubrification. Well, after adding 2 liters of oil, (the car holds 4, and I'm still not halfway up the oil dipstick mark), the car sounds normal again. This left me wondering, is there no warning light to indicate low oil levels? Is this not of great importance? If I hadn't paid attention to the noise, could I not have ruined the engine? What kind of damage might I have already inflicted on my car? It runs fine, but still... I must have a slow leak, no oil burning as far as I know...
Thanks folks!
Have a great day!
Richard
