Brooke,
Where is in the area? I am in Denver and know a good mechanic. I also have a 1998 900 SE 5 - Speed Turbo. The major service that I have done is the 60k and 90k services at somewhere around $600 each. A new water pump, $300, and new front brakes and rotors. It is also due for new shocks and strut inserts. I am also on my second set of tires. I bought mine in July of 2001 with 60k on it and it has 103k on it now. Most of what I have had to spend money on is routine maintenance, so although I have spent some $$$$, I consider it well spent and expect the car to last another 100k at least. I also spent money on trying to fix the headlights , I think that mine are inadequate, but that is another story.
I think that a mechanic can disable the shift light.
