i had this happen to me on my 97 as well. I would hit the trunk release, but the force of the driver's door closing would lock the hatch again. At the time it happened, i was due for a major service, so I mentioned it to the mech. I got it back fixed, with the line on the receipt "Adjusted rubber stops."

What I took this to mean was that the mech somehow raised (via washers?) or replaced the two rubber bumpers on the rear corners of the hatch. I'd imagine that there's not enough upward pressure from the stops to keep the hatch from re-engaging.
