Cold Start issues related to 2.3L sludge?

I have a 1997 900S 2.3L with 79k miles on it, and for the first time I've had problems starting it. The first time it happened a few days ago, I just assumed it was because I left it with about a gallon of gas overnight in 10F temperatures. I put a bottle of gas antifreeze in it and a couple of gallons of new gas and put blowdryers on the gas lines for about an hour and it finally started after some trouble. I went out again today (temperature 25F, 3/4 tank) and it again turned over and wouldn't start, although it seemed to cough a few times each attempt. I've been reading all the other 2.3L cold start issue posts, and some have been related to sludge. Could this be causing the problem? I've never had mine checked for sludge. Also, I've never had this happen before, and I go to school in Boston where my car stays parked in a parking lot for days on end in freezing temperatures. I came home to New Jersey and it suddenly started doing this. I had my battery checked when my alternator was replaced and it's fine, good for another 40 months. Should I take it to a mechanic and have him check for sludge, or is that not an issue? Could this still be water in the tank? What should be my next course of action? Thanks for any advice!
