I am a total convert to a good quick detailing product. I'ved used several brands, and am now enjoying Zymoll. I think they do wonders for any car, keeping the finish sleek and glossy between full waxes. My black '89 SPG has its original finish, it waxes up very nicely, so that means I am not willing to cause my own pain by QDing a dirty car.
I think the baseline for this kind of product is just as the directions say, the finish should be freshly washed and dried, or only very lightly dust-covered. I live in (often rainy) Seattle, so I have a hose coiled near where I park. For fresh dew and dust on an otherwise clean and waxed finish, I always spray rinse the body all over, then drive a mile or two to partially airdry (as on the way to work, frinstance), and spend 5-10 min toweling the final drops at my destination, to avoid spotting. I think it is courting trouble, swirls, and scratches, to use a QD on a wet or dirty or oxidized car. Good baseline: always towel the dew off or wash the dirt off first.
