First, you are certainly on the right track. I would suggest using the SMR first then evaluate the finish before using the Meguiar's polish. If it's what I think it is, the Meg's polish is very similar to the SMR so both steps could be redundant. You might want to try both side by side to see which one gives you better results.
As for applicators, those little round foam ones work fine. I like cotton terry covered pads but they're more expensive. Use one pad per product and have a few extras on hand in case you drop one or it gets cruddy while polishing.
Other than that your plan sounds good to me. Have fun and post a pic of your car when done.
