What is going on when I wax?

1990 9KT, no clearcoat, red paint. When I bought it this fall, I polished, cleaner waxed and waxed it. Final wax I use is Meguiars gold class. Seems like whatever I do, I get a "ghost" image of the wax when I remove it. Basically it is like a negative image of the wax, in the pattern of how I apply it (by hand). I can pretty much remove it by repolishing it with a wet towel and drying that off, but I really don't enjoy doing that. What is going on? Anyone have this problem? Is it the wax? Should I wait longer before removing even though it is white when I do? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.
