OK, first off, a couple of questions.

1. Which pad(s) did you use when polishing?

2. Do you have a single stage or clearcoat paint job?

3. Did you strip off all the old wax first?

As for speeds, when polishing the higher speeds give the best results. The PC goes to 6 and I run it there when I'm using a medium aggressive polish and pad. I slow down to 4 or 5 when using light polishes and softer pads.

The OE white pad is just OK and that may have been part of the problem. Since a PC doesn't generate much heat, you need a selection of foam pads in addition to polishes to get the best results. Meguiars, 3M, Lake Country and others make great pads. Add in a velcro backing plate and you'll be set. Check out the selection of goodies at this link: http://www.properautocare.com/porcabpolac.html

Like most compounds, the 3M fine cut really needs to be worked into the surface before removal. You didn't say how long you polished with the machine before stopping to remove. The longer you polish, the more the abrasives break down into finer and finer particles. By your description it sounds like you hazed the paint and that's usually from using a too aggressive polish or not working a polish long enough. Consider experimenting on a small section to see how much time, speed, and pressure affects the paint and the polish.

Those products you used to use sound more like glazes than compounds or polishes. Glazes are typically comprised of oils and fillers and maybe a little abrasive for polishing action. The heat generated by the wool pads along with the speed of the rotary buffer worked with the oils in the glaze to bring out a nice shine. With modern thin clearcoat paint, wool pads are only used for the most serious paint defects. They generate too much heat and can easily burn your paint.

The PC is a great little machine but it is more time consuming to use compared to a rotary. You might want to pick up a couple extra pads and experiment on a particular section to find out what works best for you and your paint job.

I hope this helps a little. It's hard to offer explicit advice for problems like this via the internet. I hope I haven't added to the confusion.
