I'll throw in my .02 on this topic. http://www.autopia.org is a great place to learn as well. I'll be a bit long here, so bear with me.

1st - buy a good, genuine sheepskin washmitt. This will help to lift dirt off the paint instead of moving it around on the surface. Just rinse the mitt frequently during use. Also, use a car wash soap; avoid using dishsoap - it's a bit too harsh. Meguiars NXT soap is very good. I use Mr. Clean Auto dry - this way I have no bucket to fuss with. Always try to wash/polish/wax your car in the shade. Hot surface temps do not play well with most products during use.

As suggested by others, use of a clay bar will yield a much better, silky smooth surface for polishing and waxing. You'll be amazed at what a difference it will make. Good for glass surfaces as well. Mother's and Clay Magic can be purchased locally and are very good products. You must use a lubricant with these, and any QD can be used effectively.

There are many different polishes to meet different paint conditions. Megiuars color X is perfect for oxidized paint. 3M Perfect-IT line of polishes are also very good, and Meguairs Scratch-x can minimize some stubborn scratches as well.

Today's waxes and sealants are easier to use. I have found that Meguiar's NXT tech wax (actually a sealant) yields great results and is very easy to use. A bit more expensive, but you use so little that it is actually a good buy.

Microfiber towels are a must - buy at least a half dozen.

And have fun!
