I'm a little perplexed here

I think I have a case of 'too much information' when it comes to detailing. My plan is to give our white '01 9-5 wagon a good wash & wax this weekend while I am at my mother-in-law's and have access to a hose and a driveway. The only exterior care it's gotten since I bought it has been regular winter hose-offs and a trip or two thru a touchless car wash.
So far, I have determined: a sheepskin mitt & two buckets will wash it well using an auto soap or perhaps dish liquid to remove all the old car wash wax. Blot it dry with microfiber towels. Use a clay bar & clay bar lubricant or soap to clean trouble spots. Then do I use some sort of prewax cleaner?!? argh!
Then what? I am confused on the difference between glazes, polishes, waxes, and sealants. I THINK I should then have on hand a polishing product to fill in tiny swirls & scratches, and follow that with a wax (sealant?). My preference is for synthetic stuff that'll last a while and is available at Autozone-type places. help!
