Think of clay as saving you the step of a heavy polishing compound to remove the little bits of road grime/tar/other contaminants from your paint & glass....
That's what I've found. I can clay and use a mild polish followed by a glaze then wax instead of having to start off with an aggressive polish on a neglected car.
I think what they are saying in the article is that it shouldn't be used more than say twice a year or so. Which makes sense because clay will remove any glaze and or wax you have on the paint.
