There are mulitple levels of aggressiveness for clay, and you should evaluate your paint's condition when selecting which product to use. Most are rather mild to medium and any damage done can be corrected easily with a decent polishing process. There are some used to remove paint overspray and paint transfer - these are much more aggressive than what you would typically find in autoparts stores.
Clay is generally a safe product for most folks and I highly recommend it. 1st time users are typically amazed at how much dirt is on the paint just after washing. The learning curve to use it effectively is very short, and the contribution to the end result can be very distinct.
