Clay Bar?? What's that all about?

I am following the multiple remarks regarding clay bar treatment on paint finish. Been detailing, hand washing, cleaning, waxing for 40 years on many kinds of cars and trucks, several in black. Never used / tried clay bar. First, is this clay process meant primarily for heavily oxidized examples? It's a wax and film stripper, right? What is actually happening when clay is used? Are there any downsides with clay bar?
My cars never get dirty / filmed enough for a heavy cleaner or a stripper. Always get super results with very frequent washing, rubdown with a name brand cleaner/wax, then carnauba paste by hand every few months. I always use an instant detailer after each wash. I am happy with Mother's, Meguiar's, or Eagle. My '89 SPG's black finish looks as new, but I am so obsessive there is always, always room for improvement LOL.
