Alcohol, #0000 steel wool, and lots of elbow grease makes some headway on it. I think I'll try the glass polish and see how it goes.
You are probably right that it's polymer residue because I had a detail shop wax it for me once. I understand these are silicone polymers, which could make them difficult because silicones can bond to glass. In fact this whole thing reminds me of trying to scrape RTV sealant residue off of glass. You can never get it all off. One hopes that the auto wax products are not as tenacious as the sealant.
