Grit/Mud Mix All Over Car - How to Remove?

So, clearly I parked my car in the wrong spot Friday. While at work, the building I was parked by was torn down, leaving my car a dusty mess. Then it rained, so it became a muddy mess. Then they did more work and added more dust to the mud. What I'm left with is a car with windows so dirty I literally cannot see out the back, and an extremely gritty film over the entire vehicle.
I am afraid to wash the car without getting this grit off first (going right at it with a mitt would cause scratches all over). I've heard power washing is not a good idea either, so, what's the best way to get this type of dirt/grit/mud off without causing serious paint scratches and damage?
