Clearcoat Confusion.

Modern automobile finishes have been clearcoated for a number of years. I have an '89 SPG 900 with very good original black finish. I wash and towel the thing 2 or 3 times/week year-round, apply an instant detailer twice a month, and use a quality cleaner/wax or straight carnauba wax about quarterly. I am quite happy with the depth and glamour of the finish. The car looks virtually new, and all the voyeurs are suitably impressed.
Why izzit then, that black color comes off on the cleaner/wax cloth even if I do the routine monthly? I am assuming this is dead paint!? Logic tells me it can't be atmospheric oils and pollution so quickly!? Simple logic also tells me it cannot actually be dead 'black' paint, since there is a clearcoat barrier!? What do I not understand here?
