Bringing up a high polish and gleam on aluminum parts can be done, and the results are most attractive when the hood is open. I agree with others, you wnat a bench grinder for fastest results. I polished the dashpots on a '67 Healey's SU carbs once, it took hours by hand using finer and finer grits, then an alum polish, but the results were worth it.
Forget car parts stores.....for the finest aluminum polishes and cleaners you must visit your local general aviation airport. Find the shops, and buy the same product they use on Cessnas. I am still using that big can of Met-All, sort of a pink goop, I bought in the 70s at the airport. Works!
