With the S40 and V40 Volvo made the mistake of trying to sell a so so car as a good car worthy of the name Volvo. You can't blame SAAB for using the Impreza platform which (in WRX and STI forms at least) as been lauded all over the world for its inherent goodness. I now own a Subaru and I started driving SAABs in 1984 and I can tell you one thing : I find in my Subaru many of the qualities I found in a car like a 1983 900 or a 1986 9000 Turbo (minus the incredible pick up of the latter). To name a few I think SAAB and Subaru offer great comfort on the highway, steering that feels connected, great bump absorption going fast on really bad roads, a sporty driving experience, the belief that a good 4-cylinder engine will do the job 99 % of times and that turbo charging is the way to go is you want to keep your cars to go fast despite keeping them relatively light and small.
I think the Subaru - SAAB marriage is one of GM's best ideas so relaxed a little... we could all be surprised.
