Stereo Opinions - 9kt Posted by Justin VanAbrahams [Email] (#32) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Justin VanAbrahams) on Thu, 1 May 2003 15:18:03 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I am planning to re-do the stereo in the 9000T. It seems a constant evolution for me, but since I’ve decided to put off finding a 9-3 (too expensive here in California) I need better tunes in the 9kt. Actually, I’m pretty happy with it currently, but I really want MP3 capability (I love it in the Alfa & 2-door) so I figure a complete re-vamp is called for.
Right now, the head unit (Blaupunkt Houston) powers Boston Acoustics 4” components up front and Boston Acoustics 3.5” coaxials in back. A separate 2x35w amp powers the Alpine 176A 6.75” mids in back. I’ve got a Blaupunkt IDC-A09 5-disc in-dash changer as well, for a full 6-discs up front.
The speakers I’m keeping (very happy with them) but everything else is gone. I’d originally hoped to keep the in-dash changer, but all of Blaupunkt’s MP3 players suck. Technologically, they are alright, but I don’t want a glaring silver faceplate from the San Jose or MP3000 and the Los Angeles is way outta my price range for the car. They have a new one - the Phoenix - that would work aesthetically, but it doesn’t have pre-amp outputs. Sheesh!
I’ve not decided on a head unit, but right now I’m trying to work out the amp situation. I’m thinking of getting 5 channels worth of amplifier and powering all the speakers off amps. The 5th channel would run the two mids, and I’d wire them in parallel to reduce the impedance to 2 ohms and net more power. Does that sound reasonable? The only problem with this scenario is space - most 5-channel amps are physically huge, and this must fit under the front passenger seat, where space is tight. I think I can work around it.
Also, any recommendations for a head unit? Blaupunkt, Alpine, and Kenwood are all OUT. I’m looking primarily at Pioneer, Sony, JVC, and Panasonic. I’m considering Clarion, but their quality seems way outta wack with everyone. It needs to look good in a primarily black 9000 dash, and needs to have good quality MP3 playback & fast track seeks. Also needs 3 pairs of preamp outputs, preferably 4v. (As a note, has anyone had first-hand experience with Pioneer's 2003 models? The 2002 Px400 models were REALLY slow between tracks - are the Px500 models faster?)
As far as speakers go, does anyone know a source for relatively thin MDF? I want to make some enclosures for the rear speakers. The plastic ones I made are pretty good, just not quite solid enough...
Thanks!
