Argon, Neon, Krypton, Xenon, Radon (which doesn't stick around too long) and Helium, (in no particular order), versus halogen gases (Flourine, Chlorine, Bromine, Idodine, and Astatine (I never heard of it either, I just looked it up on a Periodic Chart)...So-called Xenon headlights are Xenon gas electric arc discharge lights - a spark is drawn across two electrodes - the gas ionizes and provides a current path for a lower voltage current. In an "ordinary" filament bulb, a bit of wire, tungstun is best, is heated until it glows.
Halogen gas inside the bulb results in vaporized tungstun being redeposited onto the flament, so the bulb can burn hotter (brighter - with the same current, and a "whiter" light). They first used iodine gas, now I think it's a mixture of iodine and bromine. They need to use a quartz glass bulb b/c of the higher temperature; garden variety glass can't take the heat. Adding a bit of noble gas into the mix seems to help some more, specifically "Xenon", hence the "Xenon bulb" you see advertised.
This was all described pretty well in NINES a few issues back...
