For someone considering a BMW or Merc, Audi makes more sense. Nearly as good, for less money. Fewer image issues too.
I had a Mk 1 A4 with the 2.8quattro with stick and sports susp (and seats), and MAN that car flew. Amazing power in 2nd and 3rd, but certainly nothing like a turbo'ed engine. Gave it back semi-grudgingly at lease end because that suspension just beat up my back too much, and in everyday driving the seats were too much. But out in the canyons, whoa Nelly!
I also had an A6, which is a great luxo-cruiser in base model, and quite a sporty car in 2.7T or 4.2 mode. Unfortunately, the 2.8/3.0 isn't enough engine for that car and acceleration was measured with a calendar. The Bose system in that car was the most amazing car system I've ever heard, I still miss it.
