The result is the result, Phred, no way around it. Apples and oranges may make up the contents in the bowl but the total thing itself, the fruit basket, as it were, is, at the end of the day, the final thing.
Audi/VW made a mistake with BOTH the engineering/build as well as made an even bigger mistake with their lack of response to this. The Result being that people were stranded, people had crashes, there was denial of any wrongdoing by VW/Audi, more strands, more crashes, all the while dealers were covering up the fact to their customers that one fix would not necessarily actually fix the problem at all since there were potentially three more coils to go out....In other words, their response to their own mistake is most certainly as much a part of the problem, or the result as I'm calling it, as anything else was. KL and myself are not wrong to point this out and to lump them together. Lumping both engineering fault and response to the fault together doesn't mean that there aren't also other manufacturers in the distant or recent past that had the problem of both faulty engineering and faulty response--hell, this is the story of Ford and GM as we know it. It also does not mean that in the future some manufacturers may not fall victim to the arrogance of trying to look the other way to their own mistake. In other words, don't fall into the fallacy of logic to think that just because somebody else brought about a similarly large multi-faceted problem this somehow means VW/Audi should be let off easily. A wrong is a wrong. A bad result is a bad result. And there is no denying that it is correct for people to approach VW/Audi with some caution for the time being knowing that, if we base our assumptions on the recent past, the company may simply turn their heads at any future problems.
