Hey there - I have an 800 MHz Titanium PowerBook G4; aka the 15" PowerBook. Let me start off by saying that the iBook is completely out of the question; its construction may be bombproof, but the lack of a G4 processor makes it hard to justify buying one for the use of heavy processor-intensive tasks and applications. iBooks are incredible for the web/email/word processing/CD-burning crowd, but not for you and me. I also use Adobe products regularly under Mac OS X 10.2.6, and the G4 processor makes a big difference.

Now, regarding the 12" PowerBook: at one point a few months ago I was offered a trade - my Titanium for a new 12". It seemed tempting at first, but as I used the 12" in Photoshop and Illustrator, I found that the screen was just too small. 1024x768 isn't hideous, but the pixels are absolutely microscopic. The brightness and clarity in my Titanium's screen seemed to exceed that of the 12" as well. Without question, what I would suggest is the 15" Titanium. If it's too expensive, get a refurbished one. Apple has great deals on them, and they carry the same warranty as brand new ones. (Oh, and the 17" is, of course, absolutely mind-blowing... but I'm guessing it's out of your price range and isn't all that great in the portability department.)

Iin the end, what you need to do is go into a CompUSA, or better yet an Apple Store, and actually use these computers. You will know which one is right after you use them for just a few minutes. I would say that the advantages of the 12" PowerBook are the refined keyboard (less spongy than the Titanium's), its scratch-resistant aluminum shell, and portability. But oh my god, that bitch gets so hot you don't understand oh my god ow. Aluminum apparently conducts heat better than Titanium, and holy shit that thing gets roasty toasty holy mother dot com. Also, the G4 processor in the 12" lacks a Level-3 cache, so that cuts down on performance. Basically, and I mean REALLY basically, the 12" is an iBook with a G4 processor, a slot-loading CD drive, and an aluminum shell.

So needless to say, I'm releived that I didn't trade my Ti for the 12". Which is not to say that I don't think it's a fabulous Mac, just not right for my own needs.

Hope this helps, long live the Mac.

-Adrian
