I have also heard, from a number of sources, that A/C is preferable to windows open. However my experience is the opposite!
I drive 20 miles each direction to work each day here in south Florida where it's a tad warm. ;^)
80% of the trip is rural roads with little traffic, constant 65 or 70 MPH, usually w/cruise control on. Remainder is suburban traffic, average speed maybe 40 MPH. And at this time of year, the climate doesn't vary much: it's basically about 75 and humid in the morning, 90-95 and humid in the afternoon each day. Sun's out about 75% of the time.
On repeated occasions, I've reset my average gas mileage, and made the trip for a week or two either with the A/C on and all windows closed, or A/C off, both front windows down and sunroof tilted up. In every case, my mileage was 2-4 higher with the A/C off.
Car is a '97 9000 Aero, and had similar results with my previous car, a '86 9000T.
Just FYI!
