5 ton!!!???
That's a ton of capacity (pun intended), especially considering there's not likely a humidity load. Anyway, just went through the excercise, only with a different operating condition - we use heat mode about 3 times as much as a/c, so heat pump was primary design condition. Anyway, like you I kept hearing "scroll", but then *every* scroll unit I looked at had lower efficiency than the best of the piston units. Every one of them touts their quiet, but they all have to have special discharge mufflers and extra sound conditioning. Anyway, we bought Trane nad it is MUCH quieter than the older unit it replaced. Also we heard that York makes a good unit for a/c, but not heat pump. York has an interesting 2-stage strategy - they reverse the compressor motor and then two pistons operate, versus one piston only in the forward direction - some kind of one way clutch, I guess.
Also, the old "R22" operates at much lower pressures, I'm told, and home units don't tend to lose refrigerant the way mobile (car) units do. I have most of a 30 # tank in the basement anyways.
Finally, longevity is highly dependent on the installer.
