Talking on the phone or taking a call should always take a back seat to talking with someone in person. If I'm having a face-to-face conversation with someone, regardless of setting, and I get a phone call, the in-person conversation always take precedence.
I don't see their message as "incredibly rude". Maybe a little coarse but not rude. Why let others determine how you spend your time? It's my decision to spend time talking on the phone, not the decision of the person who is calling me. If someone calls me and I decide not to take their call at that moment, I'm not being rude, I'm taking control of my time and my life. You should be doing the same.
