Keep in mind I didn't actually plan it this way it just sort of evolved as things changed and were added for other reasons. At any rate, although from a security perspective I shouldn't even post, working from inside outward toward the internet:
My workstation is a dual-boot Windows/Linux system (most all interent activity orginates from this computer). When running Windows Norton Internet Security is active on the workstation. When running Linux there is a basic, installation default, iptables firewall active.
From here we route (or when using the proxy connect) through a Linux based router/proxy/firewall. Again the firewall is iptables but this time with very carefully hand crafted rules.
Finally we route through an ISP provided gateway/modem/firewall to my ISP and on to the internet. I can't configure the firewall on the ISP provided unit, don't really know how it is configured, and it doesn't maintain any logs so that is part of the reason I just left my own router/firewall running and created the second private network.
In addition, I have used non-firewall based access controls where possible too just in case the firewall is breached.
