Well, I don't like software solutions so I purchased a Linksys Cable/DSL 4-Port Router/Hub. This device allows me to block ALL incoming traffic by clicking a single checkbox and offers more advanced configuration if I DO want to route a certain port to a certain machine on my internal network. In addition I plugged a WAP (wireless access point) into this hub and can now use my laptop from anywhere in the house - the wireless link is secured using the built-in 128-bit encryption.
The hub/router also allows me to log all incoming requests so that I can see what's getting blocked, and believe me, it's a LOT. I'm on DSL so I probably don't see as much traffic as those on cable modems.
Works great, less frustration.
