Hi Brian,
While not a direct sidewall stiffness rating, the speed rating does indicate some relative measure of sidewall stiffness. Basically, the higher performance & higher speed-rated tires are the ones that have the stiffer sidewalls, since they're built sturdier to handle the higher forces. I'd expect that you wouldn't get the same stiffness out of two different brands which are rated the same, but you should see changes between models in a single manufacturer's line.
Just like treadwear ratings, right? They're only applicable between different models within an individual maker's own line of tires, & not across brands. So one manufacturer's rating of 240 may wear faster (& stick better) than another's rating of 180.
