Two full days should be enough, Vancouver to Banff is about 11 hours, depends a lot on time spent getting from the Island to Vancouver, likely around 2-3 hours with lineups and travel, traffic and siteseeing stops. Are you crossing from Victoria or Nanaimo ?? if your heading to Whistler I would suggest Nanaimo, that way you avoid driving thru Vancouver. The drive from Vancouver to Whistler and on to Lilloet and Cache Creek is spectacular and a lot of fun in a Saab !! Ask me how I know.
Midpoint would be in the Kamloops to Salmon Arm area, likely closer to Salmon Arm. Be aware there are currently several major forest fires in that area, but they are slowly getting them under control. We really need a lot of rain !! never thought you would hear that from someone living in Vancouver !!! but it has been the driest summer in over 50 years and most of the lower half of the province is bone dry.
Hope you have a good trip.
